The allure of the swirling shroud
How a dynamic bottle was created from a star-shaped piece of glass
How does a long veil move during a pirouette? The designers at Swedish cosmetics manufacturer, Oriflame, asked themselves this question when creating a bottle for the company's new fragrance. Gerresheimer delivered the answer at Cosmopack in Bologna with the Chiffon flacon an enchanting design with a "twist" in silk-matt glass (April 15-18, 2010, pavilion 19, stand C41/D42).
The creative and production teams at Gerresheimer faced the interesting and complex challenge of creating a bottle that looked like sheer chiffon fabric in motion. The design they came up with is graceful in shape with a milky, shimmering transparency. It looks like a blurred snapshot of a vortex-like movement. The testimonial for this bottle is Ukrainian singer, Ani Lorak.
The bottle started out as a little eight-pointed, star-shaped piece of glass. This subtly serrated profile produces beautiful, softly gathered folds at the narrow neck which descend in a spiral-like quarter turn to the base. Surging outwards, the spiral expands before contracting again into tight folds, like the ones on the neck, at the base. The base also shows the star-shaped outline, hardly bigger than it was before the enchanting swirls. From some side perspectives the bottle looks almost symmetrical. From others, it has distinctive, ever-changing asymmetries. Yet it is equally fascinating from all perspectives.
The bottle's impression of weightlessness was created with acid etching to give the entire surface a chiffon-like look and feel. A carefully coordinated plastic top crowns the bottle. The transparent, octoradiated corona has a gently convex top, tapering in a flowing downward movement to merge with the folds of the glass. The bottle is otherwise unadorned, except for the name of the delicate fragrance - Chiffon - which speaks for itself.
