The three most important trophies in the packaging industry have been awarded
The most exclusive packaging prize in the world honours an innovative concept under the plastics trademark Duma®
After the German Packaging Award and the WorldStar 2007, Gerresheimer has now also won the Silver President's Award 2008 of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) for highly innovative pharmaceutical closures under its Duma® trademark. The worldwide industry association made the award on May 21, 2008 in Accra/Ghana. The President's Award of the WPO is regarded as the highest-ranking honour in the packaging sector. Gerresheimer received the trophy for a pioneering development which has created new quality standards internationally for pharmaceutical desiccant closures.
The innovation affects the giant market for tablets. High-quality special containers for this widespread form of medicine have already been equipped for some time with closures in which an integrated drying element absorbs moisture from the air a well-tried way to protect medicines from premature deterioration. Up to the present, the generally applicable standard for pharma packaging production was to outsource these so-called desiccant elements from external suppliers and subsequently insert them into the closure caps. As the first manufacturer in the world, Gerresheimer changed to production of the closure systems in a single connected work process completely under one roof, thereby avoiding not only unnecessary transportation but also external influences. For the pharma industry it also has another welcome side effect: the licensing procedure, which for safety reasons requires separate registration for each outsourced component, is substantially simplified.

He and his innovative colleagues in Gerresheimer Værløse, the Group's Danish competence centre for plastic pharmaceutical packaging, also point out technical refinements in the background. In order to realise the progressive concept, for example, an additional state-of-the-art clean-room production facility was set up, which in itself sets new technology standards. And beyond the production process as well they can be justly proud of the desiccant closures: marketed as tamper-evident Duma® Twist-Off and Duma® Handy Caps the ingenious system products undoubtedly represent the qualitative peak with excellent processing characteristics in filling operations and practical handling benefits for the patient.
Only six candidates, which had previously won regional competitions and then the global WorldStar contest, were nominated by the international jury for the President's Award of the WPO. In the end, three of these succeeded in carrying off the most exclusive packaging prize in the world.
