Girls’ Day at Gerresheimer: technology is for women too

Düsseldorf, March 20, 2019. On March 28, Gerresheimer plants will open their doors to the participants of Girls' Day 2019. For the whole day, schoolgirls from the 5th class and above will have the opportunity to learn all about the technical career pathways they could follow at Gerresheimer once they finish school. This year, the production sites in Bünde, Essen, Tettau and Wackersdorf are all participating.

“Technology is for women too”, says Alexander Eckert, Global Senior Vice President of Human Resources, explaining that the Gerresheimer plants have been supporting Girls’ Day for years in an effort to inspire girls to choose technical professions.

The variety in the world of work at Gerresheimer is also reflected in the different products: glass containers, ampoules, syringes, plastic products such as inhalers and insulin pens for the pharmaceutical industry, and perfume bottles and cream pots made from glass for cosmetic products are produced in Germany.

Here is what each Gerresheimer site will be organizing on Girls’ Day.

Gerresheimer Bünde, North Rhine-Westphalia

Gerresheimer Bünde GmbH, located in the Herford district in North Rhine-Westphalia, operates one of the most modern production facilities in the world for prefillable syringe systems and cartridges. The Girls’ Day participants will learn about technical careers in electronic and industrial engineering. With around 650 staff, this plant is the Group's competence center for syringes used for the long-term storage of medicinal products such as vaccines.

Gerresheimer Wertheim, Baden-Württemberg

In Wertheim, ampoules are manufactured from glass tubing as packaging for drugs in liquid form. Only recently, “The Show with the Mouse” showed how ampoules are manufactured in Wertheim. Here the partici-pants on the tour can see first-hand how straight-stem, funnel-type, and closed ampoules are made. The hands-on part of the day will be involve a giraffe and an electronic dice – we cannot reveal more.

Gerresheimer Tettau, Bavaria

The schoolgirls will get an insight into the cosmetic glassmaking process on a company tour and pick up information across the different departments about the employees' day-to-day work – as well as learning everything about the various technical career pathways at the plant. In the hands-on part of the day, the participants will make themselves a work-piece under supervision, which they can take home along with a photo as their very own personal souvenir of the Girls’ Day.

Gerresheimer Tettau

Gerresheimer Regensburg, Wackersdorf, Bavaria

At its network of sites in Regensburg, Pfreimd, and Wackersdorf, Gerresheimer manufactures high-quality medical products from plastic, such as inhalers and insulin pens. This year, the apprentices will design the entire program of events for the Girls’ Day participants. As the apprentices are currently all learning to become process engineers for plastics and rubber technology, process engineers for glass technology, mechatronic engineers, electronics engineers, industrial engineers, tool mechanics and technical product designers, they will be able to draw on the experience gained from their everyday work to answer all of the schoolgirls’ questions. During the tour of the plant, the participants will be able to try out some training activities.

Girls’ Day 2019 at Gerresheimer

Training the next generation of employees in technical professions is very important to the company. In 2019, Gerresheimer was recognized as a MINT Minded Company for the third time in succession. This certificate is awarded to companies that are deemed to be particularly attractive employers for the subject areas of mathematics, IT, the sciences and technology.

Gerresheimer trains its junior employees mainly for its own needs. In this way, the apprentices have a very good prospect of securing a permanent contract once they pass the exam.

There are lots of opportunities to embark on a career at Gerresheimer: short internships, working students, training programs in a number of professions, dual degree courses, and the individually tailored trainee program GxGo!
