Glass process engineering apprenticeships at Gerresheimer in Essen
Düsseldorf/Essen April 12, 2016. The Gerresheimer production facility in Essen is a glass manufacturing establishment with a long tradition that operates around the clock to produce many millions of glass products every year. Most people have held a Gerresheimer product such as a tablet or cough syrup bottle in their hand at some time or other. Gerresheimer Essen takes on new apprentices every year, all of whom benefit from the knowledge and experience that is passed on to them by the company’s more experienced employees. Gerresheimer Essen is currently accepting applications for the 2016 intake of glass processing engineer apprentices and Bachelor of Engineering in Automation Technology students.
“I’ve always been fascinated by glass. And I always wanted to know how glass is made,” said Marvin Leicher, who is proud of how many well-known consumer brands are packaged in Gerresheimer's glass products - from cough medicine to deodorant. Next year he’ll be taking his final examination and completing his apprenticeship as a glass processing engineer.
Marvin loves the fact that his work includes so many different activities. He’s responsible for monitoring the production line, from processing to finishing, and ensuring product quality. In this process he is able to apply all the quality management methods and tools that he’s learned about during his apprenticeship. Another of Marvin’s jobs is to get the mostly automated machines and systems ready for the work process.
He also defines all the process steps and sets priorities if there are any deviations. Machine and system maintenance are another aspect of his everyday work. Over time the apprentice learns about all the manual and automated processes that are important in the production of glass products like as deodorant or spirit bottles.
Marvin benefits from his interest in technology and his manual dexterity in this choice of occupation. He’s particularly keen on all activities relating to the manual and machine processing of materials, such as drilling, grinding, filing, thread cutting and sawing, which he specializes in.
When Marvin and the other 22 apprentices have passed their exams, they all have a very good chance of being offered a full-time job at Gerresheimer Essen because its apprentice take-over rate is almost 100 percent. Reflecting his interests and this vocational qualification, Marvin could go on to be a machine, line or control station operator, with promotion opportunities up to shift manager level.
