Students experience glass production at Gerresheimer

Düsseldorf/Tettau-Alexanderhütte, January 25, 2013 - Glass production is a hot business. To produce glass from sand, soda and limestone, the furnace has to deliver constant temperatures of over 1,500 degrees Celsius. 14 students from the Department of Materials Engineering at the Georg Simon Ohm University in Nuremberg had the opportunity to discover more about it on January 8.

As part of a lecture on the subject of glass technology, the materials engineering students from the Georg Simon Ohm University in  Nuremberg visited Gerresheimer Tettau for a hands-on experience of the diverse production processes in the glass making industry. They had been invited to the plant by Gerresheimer after initially meeting the company during the university‘s Glass Week.

Bernd Hörauf welcomed the students and their lecturer Profes¬sor Lenhart with a presentation about the Gerresheimer Group, one of the leading manufacturers of glass packaging products with production operations at 47 plants around the world and 11,000 employees. Many of the students weren’t aware that Gerresheimer Tettau also makes glass flacons and jars that are filled with famous cosmetic products and marketed around the globe. The students asked all kinds of interesting questions about the production operations and careers at Gerresheimer to Bernd Hörauf and HR Director Ingbert Löffler.

They were then taken on a guided tour of the plant. Graduate engineer Maik Rosemann, who is responsible for batch melting, explained the basics of glass making, from raw materials delivery and storage to batch measurement and raw material mixing. In the glass production bay, which is a very hot and loud place, the students were shown the furnace and feeder, and the processes of feeder regulation and molding were explained to them. They were also given an outline of the quality requirements that the finished products have to meet. During the guided tour, the students were told about the fireproof materials, internal transport, the cooling process and glass decoration options. At the end of the tour the students entered the hottest part of the plant where the furnaces melt the glass at temperatures of up to 1600 degrees Celsius.

Gerresheimer is seeking engineers with a bachelor, master or diploma in materials engineering or material sciences.
