Düsseldorf, August 15, 2018. The “Lange Nacht der Industrie” – a initiative for German manufacturing companies meaning the “long night of industry” – will be held on October 11. Gerresheimer Essen GmbH will also be involved this year. Anyone wanting to experience glassmaking at close quarters should hurry and book a place for the plant tour. The Essen site manufactures glass packaging for the pharmaceutical, perfume, and cosmetics industries and for specific segments in the food and drink sector. Put simply, it’s highly likely that you have a bottle of cough mixture or roll-on deodorant at home that came off the production line at Essen.

“Working in glassmaking is truly special,” says Dr. Jürgen Unruh, CEO of Gerresheimer Essen GmbH. Dr. Unruh has completed a doctorate in mining engineering and likes comparing the working atmosphere at “his glassworks” to his previous work in mining. He believes the culture is tough but heartfelt and people stick together, what with glass production requiring precise and sophisticated teamwork, from the “hot” right through to the “cold” end. These are the names given to the two large areas where future glass containers are injected into moulds on the production line as hot, glowing drops and, after several work steps, ultimately go on to be packaged fully automatically at the cold end.
