Gerresheimer pays tribute to Gerhard Luber

Wackersdorf/Regensburg/Düsseldorf, January 23, 2017. You can’t just snap your fingers and make social inclusion at the workplace happen. It only happens if the people at that workplace support it. Gerresheimer paid tribute to Gerhard Luber in December for setting an impressive example to others by helping to make the workplace in Wackersdorf accessible for a disabled colleague.

Gerhard Luber is Head of Mould Engineering in Wackersdorf, so problem identification and problem resolution are all part of his everyday work. One problem he identified and resolved was workplace barriers for a disabled colleague – so he eliminated them, even though she isn’t even part of his team. He installed handrails along problematic parts of the route into the building, arranged for a brand new paved parking space to be built providing direct access to the office, and for a disabled toilet to be installed. Gerhard Luber wasn’t expecting any thanks for his actions. Instead, he was full of praise for other plant employees who work equally hard to make social inclusion happen, saying “The entire team are heroes. The conversion work we did is nothing special; their attitude to is special. Every day they help their disabled colleague into and out of the building.”
Gerhard Luber was presented with a certificate and the company has pledged a donation of EUR 500 to a charity organization of his choice. He was more pleased about being able to help others through the donation than about the tribute itself.

For many years people with handicaps were forced to live with all kinds of barriers. They were excluded from many places as a result of curbstones, doorsteps and stairs, and they had to piece together accessible routes like a puzzle, even though some puzzle pieces were missing for some destinations. Legislation on integration has already improved their situation considerably. However, statutory provisions on legislation have to be supported by a social inclusion mindset so that disabled individuals can be on an equal footing with people who don’t have disabilities in all areas of life. Gerhard Luber is a genuine role model for social inclusion.
